The Instinct Of Mothers In Birds.

The instinct of a mother is a powerful thing. You can observe this behavior in all mothers in the animal kingdom.

Mothers do anything to help, feed and protect their babies.  Their kids always come first and nothing else matters.

I saw an interesting scene this week. I stayed in a big building this week and there were some people cleaning the outside of the building. They were cleaning the windows, the roof and the lights outside.

I believe there was a nest somewhere outside and it may have been removed by them.

Later that afternoon I saw a bird by the window. It was gray and black in color. The bird was trying hard to reach a specific spot located between the roof and the window. This bird was flying insistently from one side to another of the building. She was flying between the window, the door and the tree that was close by. She kept flying into the window because she was using the ledge to rest before trying to reach the roof again.

I kept watching the mother bird and then I tried to get close to the window to see what was wrong.  I saw that she had food in her mouth.  Then I noticed that she was trying to reach her babies. Her babies were no longer there.  The spot between the roof and the window was cleaned by the maintenance worker and everything that was there was removed.

She was in pain and desperate to feed her babies.

The next day when I came in, I looked around and I didn’t see any bird. So I thought she gave up on her babies. Later in the afternoon I noticed that she was back. She did the same thing as the day before. She had food in her mouth and she was flying between the window, the door and the tree desperate without stopping. She hit herself several times on the window.  She tried insistently to reach a place that no longer was there. The maintenance people cleaned everything and fixed any type of wholes that were there.  It became impossible for the mother bird to reach the spot where the nest was located.

On the 3rd day the bird was back again. The same scene that I saw the last two previous days was happening again. She wouldn’t give up on her babies even though they were no longer there.

The 4th day came and I arrived as usual. I was expecting to see the mother bird again. She finally gave up looking for her babies and she never came back.

You can see the mother’s instinct is to protect her babies and be there for them when they need her assistance.

I never saw a scene like that and it broke my heart. I couldn’t do anything to help the desperate mother bird. How can I let her know that her babies were gone? What should I do?  I know that nature will take care of her.

That’s the reason why I ask everybody not to touch or remove any nests from anywhere. Keep the predators (including yourself) away from the nest.  Please protect the birds and their environment.  They are fun to watch and you can learn a lot by watching them.
